Before Your First Prop Firm Payout: Check More Than the Profit Split
The percentage on a landing page is only one part of a payout. Review eligibility, account checks and the effect of a withdrawal before submitting your first request.

A dashboard profit and money arriving in a bank account are different stages of the payout process. Between them may sit eligibility checks, an account review, identity verification and payment instructions. Understanding those steps before the first request makes a payout easier to plan and prevents an advertised profit split from becoming the only number in the decision.
Separate trading profit from an eligible reward
Start with the agreement for the account you actually hold. Identify which results are eligible for a reward, when a request can be made and whether any positions or orders must be closed. Also distinguish simulated trading capital from the real-money reward a provider may pay under its contract.
For example, FTMO's withdrawal FAQ says its traders use simulated capital and can receive real-money rewards when the relevant conditions are satisfied. It describes a request through Account MetriX, a review, and subsequent payment processing. It also requires open positions and pending orders to be closed before the request. These details describe FTMO's process rather than a universal industry schedule.
Calculate what the split actually means
Suppose a hypothetical programme recognises $2,000 as eligible profit and pays an 80% trader share. The share would be $1,600 before any applicable payment charges or taxes. This is a simple arithmetic illustration, not a promised return or a quote for a named account.
The key word is eligible. A percentage cannot explain a payout without the amount to which it applies. Record any payout cap, minimum amount, timing condition or consistency requirement listed for the chosen product. If the wording is unclear, ask the provider about a numerical scenario before relying on it.
Check the account after the withdrawal
The next trading session deserves as much attention as the payment itself. Establish whether the withdrawal reduces the account's loss buffer, whether its threshold resets and whether the provider issues a new account. Do not assume that the same treatment applies across products from one company.
A useful worksheet has three lines: equity before the request, expected equity or balance after the request, and the applicable breach floor afterward. If those figures cannot be reconciled from the contract, resolve the question before pressing submit.
Keep a small payout file
- Save the applicable account agreement and the payout rules you relied on.
- Check that your identity and payment details match the provider's requirements.
- Retain the request confirmation, review correspondence and payment receipt.
- Distinguish provider processing time from the time a payment service takes to deliver funds.
A payout screenshot is evidence of one transaction, not a complete description of a programme. For your own account, a reproducible process is more useful: know the eligibility rules, understand the arithmetic and confirm what trading room remains after the payment.
